Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Milky-blue swirls and streaks of green and turquoise floated in the waters of the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Tasmania in late January 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on January 25.

The color comes from phytoplankton, which are single-celled plant-like marine organisms that use chlorophyll to create energy. They are present in the ocean water year-round, but when light, water temperature, and nutrient levels are just right, tiny phytoplankton begin to reproduce explosively, often creating huge colonies which can be seen from space.

Because the large blooms are free-floating, they can mark the flow of water currents. The swirling pattern is created by eddies, or vortices, in the ocean. Converging ocean currents off the coast of Tasmania frequently created eddies. The swirling currents help bring nutrient-rich water up off the ocean floor and tend to spur the growth of phytoplankton.
