Description
English: A massive swirl of green and blue marked a spring phytoplankton bloom in the waters of the South Atlantic Ocean in late November 2015. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA�s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on November 20.

Phytoplankton are microscopic marine organisms that live in these remote ocean waters year-round. When the ideal mixture of adequate nutrients, warming temperatures and increasing light are achieved, phytoplankton can reproduce explosively, creating huge blooms which can be viewed from space. Because phytoplankton form the base of the marine food web, most areas with robust populations of phytoplankton also support thriving populations of fish and marine life.

This particular bloom is located in a very remote location of the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,250 mi (2,011 km) west of Cape Town, South Africa. The nearest land is the tiny island of Tristan de Cunha which sits about 400 mi (634 mi) to the southwest. The island is not captured in this image.
