English: Swirling blues and greens colored the waters off of England in early summer 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a phytoplankton bloom in the North Sea on June 25.
Phytoplankton are microscopic, single-celled organisms that use chlorophyll and other pigments to capture light to be used for photosynthesis. These pigments also absorb sunlight, so they change the color of the light reflected from the sea surface back to the satellite. When present in huge numbers these tiny organisms create a bloom that can be easily seen from space. Such blooms are common in the North Sea from spring until autumn. |
