Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Norway’s coastal waters were colored with swirls of milky blue in late July 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on July 23.

Phytoplankton are microscopic, plant-like marine organisms that thrive in nutrient-rich waters. While present year-round, when nutrients, temperature, and daylight are just right, phytoplankton can reproduce explosively to create huge blooms that can be seen from space.

The striking colors are caused in part by sunlight reflecting off chlorophyll and other pigments in the phytoplankton, which (like terrestrial plants) use the process of photosynthesis to create carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water. The milkyness of the color indicates that the plants are probably coated with calcium carbonate, a substance similar to white chalk. Phytoplankton blooms are common in the Barents Sea in the summer.
