Summary

Description
English: A stunning band of milky blues and deep greens colored the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Argentina in early January 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the gorgeous colors on January 5.

The colors have been created by a huge bloom of phytoplankton—microscopic plant-like organisms that live in these waters year-round in small numbers. When conditions are right (enough sunlight, nutrients, and favorable water temperature), these organisms can replicate explosively and created vast blooms that can be easily seen from space.

There are many types of phytoplankton, and more than one can be involved in a bloom. Each species may contain different pigments, and each may lend a slightly different tone to the surface waters. One type of phytoplankton, the coccolithophores, contain scales made up of a white, chalky material called calcium carbonate. As light reflects off of these scales, it can lend a milky coloration to the bloom.
