Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Streaks and swirls of green and blue colored the waters of the Baltic Sea in mid-July 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the colorful scene on July 15.

The colors give evidence of a phytoplankton bloom – a massive growth of microscopic, plant-like organisms. While phytoplankton occur in these waters year-round they are usually in relatively low numbers. Only when conditions are just right – enough sunlight, correct water temperature, and proper nutrients present – do the organisms begin to reproduce explosively, creating large blooms that can easily be seen from space.

A number of different types of phytoplankton live in these waters, and the typical blooms in spring and late summer tend to contain different species. In the summer, the predominant organisms is typically a type of blue-green algae. At least one type of blue-green algae found in these waters is considered toxic and can cause illness in animals and humans, while the others are colorful but are not toxic. It’s not possible to tell, from space, which organism is predominant nor if it is toxic.
