Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Brilliant jewel-toned swirls graced the deep blue waters of the Black Sea in early June 2017. The gorgeous colors are the result of blooms of phytoplankton – microscopic plant-like organisms. Phytoplankton live in the Black Sea in small numbers year-round and when conditions are optimal they begin to reproduce explosively. The result is a bloom that can be seen from space.

The Black Sea is a large inland body of water which connects Europe and Asia Minor. It receives fresh water from several major river systems, including the Don, Dniester, Dnieper, and Danube and also connects with the saline Marmara and Mediterranean Seas. The rivers serve as primary inflow of nutrient-filled urban and agricultural runoff, while the lengthening light of spring and summer provide ideal light and warmth. Phytoplankton blooms are common in the Black Sea in both the spring and summer.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of phytoplankton blooms in the Black Sea on June 4, 2017. The colorful blooms form swirls as they are carried by the currents within the Black Sea.
