It is true that the use of the balloonas a means of sport has been known for acentury, though the pleasure of its in-dulgence has been generally confined tothose of means, while even at that thepractice has been very limited because ofits uncertainties and dangers. But withthe development of the aeroplane andthe perfection of the dirigible balloon,by means of which one can definitelycontrol his flight, there is every promisethat before long men will fly the air asthey ply the sea. And why not? Wehave done everything else. We have notonly sailed upon the surface of the ocean,but we have gone below, diving andmoving about at will among the deepwater fishes. The horseless carriage,which twenty jears ago was no morethan a dream, has not only become areality but has been developed to such amarvelous extent that it equals thespeed of the fastest railroad trains. And as every one knows,great things are already being done inthis line. Naturally, it is not the privilege ofevery one to sail a motor-driven aero-plane, or a gigantic dirigible balloon.For the present that lies with the fewwho have devoted their ingenious andscientific minds to a life study of theproblems of aeronautics. But what thewriter wishes to emphasize here is that itis nevertheless possible for the many toindulge in the delight of riding formoderate distances upon the billows ofthe air, at a very modest expense and ina manner which is especially interestingbecause it combines the element of ex-ercise with that of sport, these being,indeed, the features which will appealmost to the average boy or man. Andit is the purpose of the writer here todescribe in detail just how the home-made apparatus can be constructed
