Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Photographs of other East Indians, mainly from Manipur, not in the Indian Cavalry.

Seven men are standing in row stretching away from the camera. Another soldier is standing at the end of the row in the process of moving around the line. He is wearing a uniform. The rest of the soldiers, however, are wrapped in white, striped cloth and the middle three are holding spears. They are standing on dusty ground in front of Nissen huts. Manipur dance has a unique and distinctive style based on stories from Hindu religion and is one of the richest arts the culture offers. Manipur is often called the 'land of festivals', most of which involve the community in dancing. The style is dramatic, vibrant and memorable. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. INDIA, AS WELL AS FIGHTING MEN, HAS SENT TO FRANCE MANY FOR LABOUR. Natives of Manipur ready to do a war dance.']
