On the 13th of July 1916 Vivian Walsh became the first New Zealander to obtain an aviator’s certificate in New Zealand; however this was not his only aviation first. Along with his brother Leo, Vivian Walsh helped to lay the foundations for both military and civil aviation in New Zealand. In 1910 they formed the Aero Club of New Zealand. Determined to build and fly an aeroplane the brothers soon completed the Manurewa No 1 and in early February at Glenora Park, Papakura Vivian was the first to fly her; for approximately 400 yards at a height of 60 feet. Not satisfied with this accomplishment Leo and Vivian set out to build the first flying boat in the Southern Hemisphere. After more than a year of construction in March 1915 Vivian Walsh took the first of numerous passengers on a flight of five miles. Seen here flying over Bean Rock Lighthouse in 1915 with Vivian at the controls and passenger, the flying boat was a great success. With the outbreak of the First World War the usefulness of aircrafts soon became apparent and quickly both the Defence Department and the Walsh brothers were inundated with requests from would-be pilots wanting to qualify to join the Royal Flying Corps. With the RFC requesting as many candidates as could be trained the brothers quickly set up the New Zealand Flying School and began training students in October 1915. By February the next year the school had Imperial recognition and the support of the NZ Defence Department, training over 100 pilots during the war many gaining honours and decorations. With his immense experience and considerable contribution to New Zealand aviation it is fitting that on the 13th of July 1916 Vivian Walsh received his pilot’s certificate, becoming the first in New Zealand.
