Text Appearing Before Image:
ndition of the skin which may present a perfectlynormal appearance until some external irritation evokes the character-istic wheals. This condition has been described as urticaria faftitiaor dermographism. In the patient, whose back is shown, it hadexisted since childhood. About five minutes before the photographwas taken the crosses and lettering were gently scratched upon theskin by means of a dull pointed instrument. Congestion of the partappeared immediately and in less than a minute the white linesdeveloped and gradually became raised abruptly above the surface.In nearly as short a time they had flattened and faded, leaving merelya trace of redness upon the skin. The lower left illustration shows the typical wheals of urti-caria occurring upon the thigh of a patient who suffered from acuteindigestion. The lower right illustration shows a number of wheals producedby scratching. The flat surface is reddened or slightly excoriated,while a white band remains at the margin. PLATE XCI.
