In many patients small abscesses areliable to develop, and in some cases of long standing a number ofsharply defined and sunken cicatrices may be found over the sternumas well as upon the back. The severe forms of acne of the trunkoccur usually in male patients. The patient who was the subjec:!: of the accompanying illustra-tion manifested a strumous tendency, having a sluggish circulation anda thick, greasy, inadive skin. There were many pustules present andmore traces of former lesions in the shape of stains and pits, and atone point a dull red patch of skin was undermined by an accumulationof sanious pus. The eruption had persisted for several years andgrown worse, in spite of the application of various ointments. A coldbath every morning and the vigorous use of a curette twice a weekeffefted a speedy improvement. This treatment is usually all that isrequired, but the progress toward a cure is apt to be slow in most cases. PLATE II.

The former is usually the exciting cause of the latter. While the comedos are very numerous in this case, appearingas small conical elevations surmounted by a black dot, which is theouter extremity of the spindle or pear-shaped plug, but few havebecome inflamed and transformed into acne pustules. The second illustration shows an inflammatory condition of thehair-follicles of rare occurrence, and presenting a resemblance tosycosis as it occurs upon the bearded portion of the face. Thealopecia was of the premature form, and not the result of thefollicular disease as in the case of folliculitis decalvans. The casesuggested a diagnosis of acne varioliformis which often occurs uponthe scalp, but there w
