Description

Trader, land speculator, writer and artist Joel Samuel Polack was born in London on 28 March 1807. He arrived in New Zealand in 1831 and lived in Hokianga for one year before moving to the Bay of Islands. Polack purchased several pieces of land from Māori and built a substantial house and several other buildings, including the country's first brewery in 1835. He was a successful trader, selling flax, timber and general produce.

In 1837 Polack signed the petition to William IV requesting that the British government assume responsibility for the protection and government of European settlers. That same year, Polack returned to England and in 1838, he advocated colonisation in evidence given before a House of Lords select committee of inquiry 'into the present state of the islands of New Zealand'.

Polack wrote two books based on his experiences in New Zealand – New Zealand, being a narrative of travels and adventures during a residence in that country between the years 1831 and 1837 (1838) and Manners and customs of the New Zealanders; with notes corroborative of their habits, usages, etc., and remarks to intending emigrants (1840). A talented artist, he illustrated both books with plates from his own sketches.

In 1850 Polack left New Zealand for California, and he died in San Francisco in 1882. He is best remembered for his books, which provide an invaluable insight into pre-colonial New Zealand, and are still quoted to this day.

Archives New Zealand holds the above photograph of a map created by Polack in 1838. The photograph was transferred to Archives New Zealand as part of the Former Post and Telegraph/Telecom Museum Holdings.
