Ελληνικά: Ένα πλαστικό πιάτο τοποθετείται μεταξύ δύο διασταυρωμένων πολωτών και εμφανίζει έντονα και όμορφα χρώματα. Σύμφωνα με τη θεωρία της φωτοελαστικότητας, η κατανομή των χρωμάτων παρέχει πληροφορίες σχετικά με την ύπαρξη και την κατανομή των τάσεων στο υλικό του δείγματος. Οι τάσεις μπορεί να είναι αποτέλεσμα εξωτερικών δυνάμεων ή μόνιμες τάσεις που προέκυψαν από τη διαδικασία κατασκευής του δείγματος (όπως συμβαίνει και στην περίπτωση του πλαστικού πιάτου της εικόνας).
English: A plasticplate placed between two crossed polarizers appears intense and beautiful colors. According to the theory of photoelasticity, the allocation of the colors gives information about the existence and the allocation of stresses in the material of the ruler. These stresses may be a result of external forces or may be permanent stresses because of the procedure the plastic plate was manufactured (as it happens in the case of this picture). |
