Description
English: Photo from the collection in the image archive of the National Library of Norway, labeled as Photos taken by a German soldier during World War II and Description: World War II, German soldier. The pictures were given to the National Library by the soldier's daughter, who resides in Germany. Her father rarely spoke about this period in his life when he worked on road construction and railways. She knew nothing about the photos and where in Norway he was stationed.
  • Group picture of four German soldiers alongside a man and six women from the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK), the German Red Cross, standing and sitting around a table in a backyard. The individuals are smiling, and the atmosphere seems light and pleasant. The time and location are unknown, but the picture was likely taken in Germany early in World War II.
    • The soldiers are wearing uniforms for the Wehrmacht Heer, Nazi Germany's army, with greatcoats (Mantel), tunic, and field caps (Schiffchen, side caps) in models used around 1940. Two of them are displaying the sleeve chevron rank insignia (Ärmelwinkel) for Gefreiter (Lance Corporal).
    • The DRK man is wearing a paramilitary uniform with the rank insignia of DRK-Vorhelfer (Front Helper), and the women are dressed in nurse uniforms for DRK-Helferinnen (Assistant Nurses). The DRK district patch (a triangular cloth patch on the right upper sleeve) displays a national eagle-and-swastika and possibly "Ludwigshafen a. R. 1". The woman on the front right side is wearing collar rank insignia as a Vorhelferin and badge pins as a member of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and their women's organization, the National Socialist Women's League (NS-Frauenschaft).
