Description
English: Rct. Zachary West, 18, Platoon 2077, Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, practices clearing his mask before entering the gas chamber during chemical and biological warfare defense training July 30, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The training ensures recruits become comfortable with using a gas mask in a chemically or biologically contaminated environment. Chemical warfare instructors exposed recruits to tear gas, which is a non-lethal agent that causes watery eyes, respiratory irritation and a burning sensation on the skin. West is a native of Jacksonville, Fla., and is scheduled to graduate Sept. 20, 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps.
