Description

Pholiota decorata (Murrill) A.H. Sm. & Hesler

Image location: Mill Creek Campground, Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Jackson Co., Oregon, USA

Growing on the ground in mixed woods. Caps up to 5.6 cm across, dry and partially finely appressed fibrillose. They had a slight odor; could not identify. Spore print brown. Spores ~ 6.1-8.2 X 4.1-5.1 microns, ellipsoid to elongate, smooth. Gill cystidia present, ~55-75 X 10-12 microns, subutriform to fusoid-ventricose. Maybe a veiled Hebeloma but spores appear to be too small and too smooth for what I can find in the Smith book. edit; Henry Beker agrees that the spores are not Hebeloma-like. They appear to have a small germ pore….making Pholiota a possibility.
