Description

Grave of Phineas Pease at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, in the United states.

Pease (1826-1893) was born in Somers, Connecticut, and moved to Illinois in the 1840s to work as a laborer on railroads. He moved up and became a on-board train worker and then conductor. He moved to Ohio. When the Columbus & Xenia Railroad opened between Columbus and Xenia, connecting Columbus to Cincinnati, he was one of two conductors on the train. He moved back to Illinois at the end of the 1850s. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the 49th Illinois Volunteers. He was repeatedly promoted, becoming a brevet Brigadier General at the end of the war. He participated in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, and Nashville. He was severely wounded at Shiloh, and never fully recovered.

Returning to Illinois after the war, he was named superintendent of the Indiana, Bloomington & Western Railroad in 1875, and superintendent of the Ohio Central Railroad in 1880. In 1885, he was named receiver of the Cleveland & Marietta Railroad. The railroad had tracks into the Macksburg oil fields. Standard Oil demanded that the railroad carry barrels of oil for 35 cents a barrel -- and then turn over 25 cents of this income to the oil company. Pease did so, and when the scheme was uncovered Pease lost his job as receiver.
