Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Philip and Mary Point, near Portwilliam. This point is believed to be named after a Spanish galleon which was wrecked here. Presumably in its turn, the galleon was named after Mary I, Queen of England and Ireland, 1553-1558 (daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon) and Philip of Spain. The point is one of the many sites along the coast of Wigtownshire which features in the history of smuggling.
