Tiie seat of justice, with Cambridge and Concord, of Middle-sex county, and the second city in the state in pojmlation, issituated at the confluence of Concord and Merrimac rivers, 25miles northwest of Boston. From an insignificant village, in1822, it has sprung up into a wealthy and populous city, cele-brated over the world for its unrivalled manufactories of cottonand woollen fabrics, by which it has gained the title of the Manchester of America. The secret of its prosperity lies inthe vast water-power, which enterprise and skill have turnedinto available channels. By a canal which connects the Merrimacbelow Pawtueket falls, with Concord river, water is conveyedto the town and distributed to the various factories. Aboutthirty are engaged in the manufacture of cotton ; a number ofothers produce woollen fabrics of various kinds, as carpets,broadcloths, cassimeres, calicoes, machinery for railroads,
