Toward the north, the romantic heights of Statenisland rise to view, and on the east, the shores of Long island.Following the Narrows, hetween the two islands, which are de-fended by strong fortifications, the upper or inner part of thebay opens an enchanting scene. Staten island reeedes, and theshores of New Jersey reappear. Long island continues on theright, and after passing Governors island, with its fortifications,the great city displays its forest of masts and spires, its domesand its houses, relieved by the green foliage of the Battery,set, like an emerald, in some darker stone. The ground risesfrom the Battery, and from both rivers, by a gradual ascent, ofwhich Broadway js the ridge, or summit.
