Stick Insects Half the morning I have been staring at sticks, hoping that one of them would move independently of the others, or betray itself with its pinhead of an eye. And now, here they are, four of them, one half the size of its green and twiggy elders. Their legs are jumbled together in impossible, jointy knots, as though they are at some game of phasmid Twister, their antennae bristling, anticipating the next unlikely move. I shall cycle home feeling conspicuous, ridiculous even, and every time I close my eyes, I shall see green sticks sprouting legs and flexing their jointed skins, entwined in loving clumps of a thousand articulations. Source material: Written for Keri and Hannah, presenter and reporter for Radio Scilly, who broadcast some poems from my Scillonian Sketches in August and early September 2004. Keri also alerted me to the presence of the group of stick insects described in the poem, hiding amongst Eucalyptus saplings in the exotic plant nursery to the north of Trenoweth, St. Mary’s. Scilly has three different species of stick insect or phasmid, all of them inadvertently introduced along with plants from Australia. In addition to eucalypts, the phasmids are also sometimes found eating Pittosporum (imported from New Zealand), brambles, and introduced garden plants such as Leptospermum. The species described here is the smooth stick insect, Clitarchus hookeri, and on Scilly, there are only females, which reproduce by parthenogenesis. Written on 2nd September 2004. See Adrian Spalding and Pat Sargeant, Scilly’s Wildlife Heritage, Twelveheads Press, p. 12. (Poem: Giles Watson, Summer 2004.) |
