Summary

[edit]
Description

Stained glass, c.1540, Mapperton Church, Dorset. Arms of Peverel of Bradford Peverel, Dorset (Gyronny of eight argent and gules) impaling Bardolf (?) (Argent, a chevron gules between three covered cups or). (Source: John Hutchins, History of Dorset, Vol.I, 1774, p.445[1]). These arms of Bardolf are not listed in the standard heraldic source of Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884.

Nor are they listed in Papworth, John Woody, Alphabetical Dictionary of Coats of Arms Belonging to Families in Great Britain and Ireland, Vol.I, London, 1874, pp.414-415, concerning a chevron between three cups. The family to bear the most numerous variety of this arrangement is Butler/Boteler, etc. Stained glass circa 1540, matching others of the same style in the same church. The same shield is recorded by Hutchins in a window of the manor house at Bradford Peverel. Perhaps this glass was brought from that house? The pedigree of Peverel provided by Hutchins on p.443 omits the names of most of the wives, of whom one would have been a Bardolf, as suggested by this impalement.
