A notice indicates this fountain (from 200 BC – 200 AD) is one of the most remarkable features found along the Wadi al-Farasa processional route, It is an example of how the Nabateans created attractive monuments out of functional amenities. Water once gushed forth from the open mouth of the huge lion one sees. A carved channel above the lion’s head received water from the Ain Braq spring and the water collected in a basin here, and eventually flowed to a large cistern at the foot of the mountain. To the left of the fountain is an elevated area with a carved altar. This may have been used for rituals conducted to thank the gods for the water supply, as water was sacred to the Nabataeans.
