[edit]DescriptionPetition Cards to Robert Muldoon (9354156163).jpg |
On this day in 1981, protestors against racism and apartheid in South Africa stormed the Hamilton Rugby Grounds, forcing the abandonment of the Springbok-Waikato match. The action formed part of a larger series of disturbances during 1981 - the largest and most violent since the 1951 Waterfront Lockout. Archives New Zealand holds numerous records on the 1981 Springbok Tour (including Operation Rugby Police records and politician's papers) but the majority of these are restricted. The open records above are part of a July petition to Robert Muldoon, then-Prime Minister of New Zealand, calling for the Springbok rugby team to be refused entry into the country. It uses Muldoon's own words against him, quoting a speech he delivered to the United Nations in 1978: "A policy of apartheid is not only wrong; it is suicidal. It seeks to impose that which cannot be imposed, to deprive people of rights and freedoms that cannot be denied." The petition failed, leading to the more-direct action taken on 25 July.
