Description
The painting illustrates an alledged scene from the Danish 1533-36 civil war (Grevens Fejde). Hans Madsen had been held prisoner by the troops loyal to Christian II, but he escaped and reached the troops of the later king Christian III to bring news of their opponents' plans. The story goes on to tell that this helped Johan Rantzau win a battle for Christian III, and the king would add the parish of Horne to Madsen's parish of Svanninge in 1536.
