Perspective Pillars of Corridor-Chennakesava Temple, Somanathapura, Karnataka

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This ‘TRIKUTA’ Temple is dedicated to Sri Krishna with its 3 sanctums connected by a vestibule. Here Sri Krishna is in three forms – Janardhana, Keshava(missing) and Venugopala each in a separate sanctum.

This ‘Chenna Kesava’ (means Handsome Kesava) temple, according to George Michell, represents the climax of the development in Hoysala temple architectural style and is unique in many ways. This ornate temple is raised on a typical Hoysala styled star shaped platform, enclosed inside an ambulatory walkway lines which contains numerous shrines, but are now empty. The periphery walls of the temple contains puranic depictions from Ramayana, Mahabharatha and Bhagavath Purana sequenced in the direction of the ‘pradakshina’.

Unfortunately, this breathtakingly beautiful temple is no longer used as a place of worship, as the deities here have been damaged and the temple was desecrated by the invasion of the Muslim Sultanate.
