Styles followed on the heels ofeach other so fast that it was impossible for women to keep up.^ This situation means complete disorganization of whateverregularity there has been in an already irregular business. Buyersbuy sparingly of each style in anticipation of a new one. The seasonis, therefore, very short. When a new style appears, there isanother sudden batch of rush orders to be pushed out under highpressure—and then, stagnation. Two long seasons have beenchopped up into a number of short seasons. It is now impossiblefor the wage-earner to know what pay he will receive, or for theemployer to know what business is in sight for him.
