Others followed, dischargingtheir arrows at the teamsters as they passed ; but theteamsters remained each by his team, keeping the mulesin their places, and closing up the line. At the sametime they kept the enemy at bay by levelling theirpistols at them. These men had the presence of mindto keep their seats in the saddle and to hold their fire,which the savages wanted to draw. Had they firedand missed their mark (and the chances were ten toone against their hitting), they would have beenpierced by a lance or an arrow the next moment. The men who were riding by the side of thewagons sprang to the aid of the teamsters, and heldthe leading mules, which kept them in their places. TO CHIHUAHUA. • 413 party there wlio were driving the spare mules andhorses. Two Mexicans, herdsmen, were unhorsed bythe charge ; and a third, being wounded, fell fromhis animal. He, however, held on to his bridle, whenan Indian rushed at him and pierced him to the heartwith his lance. The momentary pause of this manmade him a good mark for the rifle, and sealed his fate.Several were discharged at once, which brought thefellow to the ground. His companions seeing him fall,ran to his rescue, raised him up, and threw his bleed-ing body across a mule ridden by another Indian, whenthey rode off at full speed. The firing now became general; but the constantmotion of the enemy, enabled them to escape. Thefive Mexican soldiers, who were on foot, stood up tothe fight manfully, and were in the thickest of it.
