Summary

[edit]
Description Native, warm season, perennial herb with stems to 1.3 m tall (usually <1m). Above-ground plant parts turn red in autumn and die off. Leaves are 5-12 cm long with hairy leaf sheath margins. Flowerheads are elongate, slender and often drooping with greenish-white flowers that are 4 mm long and densely glandular. Flowers during the warmer months. Unsure if it has been introduced from the northern hemisphere, where it is widespread. A weed of damp to wet pastures. Common in damp places like drainage lines, edges of dams and periodically flooded areas especially on floodplains. Juice from plant will cause eyes and skin to smart, hence the common names of Smart Weed and Water Pepper. Seeds are not readily eaten, but if so may cause internal irritation to stock. In areas where ponded pasture is an option, shallow ponding will encourage water couch and discourage smart weed.
