Tabriz, the residence of the heir apparent to the Persianthrone, and the commercial centre of Azarbaijan, is a citywhose age and birthplace are not known, but it may count athousand years as but a fraction of its life. The Persian tra-dition which ascribes its founding to Zobeidah, the wife ofHarun al-Rashid (better known as the Caliph Haroun Alra-schid of the Arabian Nights, A.D. 800), sets its date too late, asin the case of Kashan and other cities which are said to havebeen built by this heroine.
