Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Permit to Travel A "Permit to Travel" machine at Lymington Pier station. These machines were introduced by British Rail's "Network South East" at unstaffed stations in the 1980s but were being withdrawn by 2006. The idea was that by paying a token amount (as little as ten pence) the passenger would avoid a fine for not having a full ticket, and the amount paid could count towards a full ticket bought on the train or at the destination. Presumably it was cheaper for B.R. to install these simple machines than more complex ones offering a range of fares.
