English: Permissive Bridleway, Pagham Harbour This embanknment once carried the Selsey Tramway which linked that town to Chichester. Designed by Holman Stephens it was designated a tramway to avoid the stringent safety checks needed for a light railway. Consequently, the line was built with little engineering and no signalling and opened in 1897. To begin with the line was reasonably successful carrying passengers and goods but the storms that breached the recently dammed Pagham Harbour also washed away the embankment along this stretch closing the tramway for a brief period time. However, it reopened soon after and reached its peak in 1917. Thereafter, the ramshackle nature of the line started to tell against it particularly with new competition from the roads and numbers dropped to the extent some services ran with no passengers at all. A fatal accident in the late 1920s due to a derailment was the beginning of the end, Southern Railways was unwilling to purchase the line and the last train ran in 1935 whereupon the line was lifted. This part is now a permissive bridleway linking Ferry Pool with Sidlesham Quay and is part of the Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve.
