Description Permian sandstone with tillite deposits, Werribee Gorge State Park, Victoria Australia. During the Permian Period 250–290 million years ago movement of a continental ice sheet collected, transported and dumped a mix of mud, stones and boulders in the area. At the time the Australian continent was further south, part of Gondwana and much colder. As the glacier moved, rocks in and around it were ground up and broken. As it melted this load was dumped forming tillite. Tillite is the grit and powdered rock containing unsorted irregular stones, many of them quartz, granite, chert, slate and other erratics (erratics are rocks or rock fragments transported from another place by a glacier or by floating ice). Many rocks are flattened, sharply broken and striated (marked with parallel scratches), from sliding over other rocks while embedded in the ice. Source: Parks Victoria
