Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Perlite from the Pleistocene of California, USA.

Perlite is a usually-gray, hydrated, rhyolitic, glassy rock. It forms by aqueous alteration of obsidian, a usually-black, rhyolitic, glassy rock.

This specimen is from a rhyolitic volcanic dome in eastern California's Big Pine Volcanic Field, which is otherwise populated by small, alkaline mafic volcanic centers. The rhyolitic dome consists of perlite of varying vesicularity, brecciated obsidian, and perlitic vitrophyre.

Stratigraphy: Fish Springs Perlite Deposit, Big Pine Volcanic Field, Pleistocene
