Text Appearing Before Image:
Marriage of Lieut. Peptina(badly wounded in the foot)at the Church of St. Jacques,in Paris. The Lieutenant,Who Won Honors for Bravery,Was Supported to theCarriage by HisBeautiful Young Bride.
Text Appearing After Image:
Backed by the French government and the society he represents.he has created a second LightedHearth of the blind community un-der his direction in Paris. Earthly Purgatory. The first three days I spent herewith the blind, he says, in tellingof his work, were passed in themidst of a sort of earthly purgatory.I have never before seen so muchthoroughgoing misery foregatheredin a single place. My chargesmoped through the long hours ofthe day, nursing their bitterness. The stillness of the eights wasbroken often and of^en by theirhoarse sobs as they lay in tortureon their narrow cots. * At that time our workshopswere not ready, and I was in de-spair to know what to do with themen. But the end of my difficultiescame unexpectedly. On the fourthday of our history here I discoveredthat our instructor in the Braillesystem of reading and writing—himself a blind man—had learnedthe trade of a brushmaker. Hesaid he could teach a man to makea brush, after a rough fashion, in afew hours. Salvation
