Description

THE "PERISTYLE" MICHIGAN CITY - IND.

Date: 1911 Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Alfred E. Smith Postmark: September 23, 1911, LaPorte, Indiana Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: This structure was completed in Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana's Washington Park in 1893 with funding provided by John Barker. The building was intended to replicate at building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in nearby Chicago. Barker was owner of the Haskell & Barker Car Company in Michigan City, a major manufacturer of railcars and founded in 1855. Barker became to amass significant wealth during the Civil War when his company was awarded government contracts to supply railcars of the Union war effort.

This structure was razed in 1969.
