Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Perhaps Anne Wootton alias Woodhouse alias Reppes, Mrs. Bassingbourne Gawdy by Hans Eworth. The Portrait was formerly known as Lady Anne Penruddocke, but Hope Walker rejects this identification. Instead she and Kate Emerson suggest that Anne Wootton (1536 – June 1587) alias Woodhouse alias Reppes, Mrs. Bassingbourne Gawdy is the sitter. This based on a description by George Vertue of her portrait. The portrait is inscribed ‘AETATIS 20 1557’. "Aetatis" is an expression of the sitter’s age. It is a close approximation of the age of the sitter, i.e. within a twelve-month. It can be interpreted as equivalent to the modern expression of age, plus or minus one. The sitter is therefore 19, 20 or 21 years old.
