Summary

[edit]
Description "South Italian" is the term generally used to describe the vases made under the influence of Attic vase painting in the area of Southern Italy at the end of the 5th and mainly 4th century BC, where the Greeks had settled. In the beginning, the vases copied the shapes and paintings of Athenian examples. However, over the course of time the paintings became more intricate and a wider range of colours was applied. The scenes depicted mostly derived from Greek myths, such as the liberation of Promotheus and Andromeda, or the legends of the battle of Troy. They were well known comedies and tragedies performed in the theatres of southern Italy. In addition, there are reoccurring representations of the deceased in a naiskos, mourned by the surrounding women and youths. These vases were found in graves belonging to the furnishings, often as sets. At the funeral ceremony vases were displayed as showpieces.
