English: An overview of Peoria from the air. I had a new job in Washington, and was flying on a Saturday morning for househunting in the Virginia suburbs.
Downtown Peoria is in the center of the photo. You can see the Murray Baker Bridge, which carries Interstate highway I-74 across the Illinois River. The McClugage Bridge crosses the river at the narrow point between Peoria Lake (foreground) and Upper Peoria Lake (background). It carries U.S. highway 150, War Memorial Drive in Peoria. The three prominent north-south streets are (right to left) Knoxville Road, Sheridan Road, and University Street. The distance from my home to the Caterpillar Administration Building was 7 miles (11 km). East Peoria Plant, Caterpillar's largest plant, is in the foreground. The column of smoke in the background may be Mossville plant, where Caterpillar built diesel engines. This was January 1977, one of the coldest months on record in Peoria. The temperature never reached 32 degrees (0 C). Everything that is not urban is covered with snow. The Illinois River was frozen, except for a channel. The very cold days were also very clear. |
