Photograph of spectators watching the throwing of snakes into the sacred meal at Hopi Snake Dance Ceremony at pueblo of Oraibi, Arizona, ca.1898. The dozen or so dancers stand in a rough circle at center. They wear highly decorated skirts, animal tails, feathers, necklaces, bracelets, and leggings. Their chests, arms and faces are painted white. A large group of mostly white spectators stand in the background before the dwellings of the pueblo visible behind them.
