Title |
Penny of Coenwulf |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete silver penny of Coenwulf, Group I substantine type, c.796-805 AD. As North, 1980: no. 342. The edges of the flan are incomplete and one side has been bent to an angle of almost ninetry degrees due to post-depositional damage. The Clywd–Powys Archaeological Trust believes the tribrach on the reverse is supposed to represent the archiepiscopal pall. The central letter on the obverse may be a variant of the usual Alpha and Omega (ω) or a similarly styled overbar m indicating an abbreviated Merciae ("[King] of Mercia") or Mercianorum ("[King] of the Mercians"). |
