Summary

[edit]
Description

Rail services to Cardiff are always especially busy on days when international rugby matches bring tens of thousands of spectators to the city, and the Millennium Stadium is located just a few minutes' walk from Cardiff Central. Arriva Trains Wales and First Great Western both provide additional services to and from Cardiff.

On 8th August 2015 Wales played Italy in a warm up game for the World Cup at the Millennium Stadium. It was a busy day sports wise, as Cardiff City Football Club were also playing at home - to Fulham.

One additional service which ran from London was the 0934 London Paddington rugby charter , formed of Direct Rail Services Class 57 locos (5708 and 57310) and a rake of 11 MkII carriages - which with their various liveries, made for a colourful sight.

The train is seen here in the eastern suburbs of Cardiff, passing Pengam sidings, and running approximately 15 minutes late. On arrival at Cardiff Central the train worked empty to Port Talbot, before returning to Cardiff, and was due to be stabled in Pengam sidings (on the right hand side of this photo) until it was required back at Central station for the return trip to Paddington.
