Summary

[edit]
Description This massive former Industrial building is the Pendleton Art Center, which is a massive concentration of artists in the city of Cincinnati. Constructed in 1909, the eight-floor building was originally owned by the Krohn-Fecheimer Shoe Company, which later became known as US Shoe. However, by the mid-20th Century, the shoe company had moved out, and Shillito's Department Store, a former local chain, bought the building and converted it into their warehouse and distribution center, a function that it served until Shillito's was merged with Rike's in the 1980s. The building sat empty for a few years, until the locally headquartered Verdin Company, which has the designation of the oldest bell and clock manufacturer remaining in the world, opened the space in 1991 as an art center that houses and showcases the work of local artists and artisan craftspeople. Today, the entire building is occupied by the artists and artisans, whom work inside on their various projects and crafts. The building is opened to the general public every last Friday of each month, which is a hugely successful enterprise that attracts crowds from around the region to the art center. The catalytic project has turned Pendleton from just another distressed inner-city neighborhood into a vibrant arts and design district, and has helped lead to the redevelopment and restoration of many historic buildings in the neighborhood over the past few decades.
