Pendant drop - effect of tension surface and refraction index on the drop shape

Summary

[edit]
Description

English: These four images show a drop of polyethylene glycol (PEG) introduced with a 0.5mm diameter syringe in another liquid: air (up-left), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (up-right), castor oil (bottom-left) and hazelnut oil (bottom-right).

The drops' shape is defined by the surface tension between the two compounds. The measurement of the drop dimensions gives an estimation of the surface tension value.

The contrast between the drop contour and the rest of the image is defined by the difference in refraction index between the two compounds.
