A lovely day trip from Lisbon, 40 minutes out from the Rosso train station, you arrive in Sintra. At the foot of the hills, you climb up through eucalyptus trees, past the first Moorish Castle, arriving at the Pena National Castle - the Palácio Nacional da Pena. It is reminiscent of Hearst Castle in California, both follies to an earlier age of dacadence. This photo was taken from Cruz Alto, a peak half a mile away, at 529m, a quiet outpost visited by just a handful of the people that visit the main palace. A walk describing the circuit is in the Lisbon Walk and Eat book by Sunflower Books. Alternately Sintra Tourist Information give a good map, which you can follow up here. Descending from Cruz Alto, you can walk through the surrounding park with many surprises - a fern tree valley, a couple of cedar trees, lakes, herb gardens, a true delight. |
