O antigo concelho de Azurara, actualmente integrado no concelho de Vila do Conde, recebeu foral do conde D. Henrique (confirmado por D. Afonso) ainda em 1102. A localidade permaneceu durante séculos como um importante porto marítimo, a par da barra de Vila do Conde; a produção de embarcações nos seus estaleiros contribuía para o seu funcionamento como um centro de dinamização da expansão ultramarina. A importância estratégica de Azurara não lhe garantiu novo foral manuelino, mas da passagem de D. Manuel por estas terras, em 1502, resultou um forte impulso no avanço da edificação da então matriz, a Igreja de Santa Maria, no adro da qual se ergue o pelourinho, diante da fachada Norte e junto da entrada lateral. O soco é constituído por dois degraus circulares, de parapeito. Sobre estes assenta uma singela base prismática, rematada em calote, sustentando o fuste, liso e de seção circular. O capitel é verdadeiramente o remate do pelourinho, em forma de urna, constituída por meia calote esférica decorada com dentículos de tipologia clássica, e por um pescoço sobre o qual se levanta um espigão de ferro. O conjunto inscreve-se geralmente entre as muitas picotas manuelinas que então se ergueram por todo o território; no entanto, e pese embora o apelo da proximidade da igreja referida, cuja construção contou com grande auxílio e interesse da parte de D. Manuel, será de considerar que pelo menos o remate do pelourinho é de elaboração posterior.
