O primeiro foral da actual Aldeia Galega da Merceana, então denominada Montes de Alenquer, foi concedido à povoação por D. Dinis, em 1305. A construção do pelourinho, classificado como Monumento Nacional, deverá no entanto datar da época do foral novo manuelino, outorgado em 1513. O pelourinho ergue-se no largo com a mesma designação, diante do edifício medieval da Casa da Rainha ou Paço de D. Leonor, hoje sede da Junta da Freguesia, onde segundo a tradição pernoitava a rainha D. Leonor, esposa de D. João II, quando percorria a via medieval galega nas suas viagens entre Lisboa e Caldas da Rainha. O monumento é composto por um soco de dois degraus circulares, de factura moderna (1936), sobre o qual se ergue o conjunto da base, coluna e remate. A base é poligonal, e talhada no mesmo bloco da primeira metade do fuste. Este é constituído por quatro colunelos lisos, espiralados à esquerda, que se projectam a partir dos vértices arredondados da base, intermediados por superfícies profusamente decoradas. O fuste é seccionado a meia altura por um largo anel ornamentado, com molduras salientes oitavadas. A decoração comum ao anel e às faixas entre os colunelos é essencialmente fitomórfica, com representações de romãs, glandes e vides, entre folhagem tipo acanto. As faixas vegetalistas elevam-se a partir de um pequeno troço imitando verga entrançada, sugerindo provavelmente as cercas de delimitação de hortos, pomares ou jardins. Sobre o fuste assenta o capitel, semelhante em estrutura e decoração ao anel medial, mas ostentando numa das faces o brasão do antigo concelho, cuja sede era nesta localidade. Este está já muito desgastado, mas ostentaria seguramente uma representação das cinco quinas em torno de uma árvore arrancada pela raiz. O remate consta de uma pinha oitavada, encimada por quatro grandes cogulhos de acanto, em torno de uma pequena calote, evocando o perfil de uma coroa fechada. No fuste existem ainda vestígios do ferro de sujeição. O pelourinho sofreu alguns restauros em 1936, quando a Câmara Municipal substituiu algumas cantarias, incluindo os degraus originais.
