Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1774 Peleg Cogeshall House at 9 Orange St. Nantucket Mass. The plaque of the Nantucket Historical Society says that he was a cooper. That is, a maker of wooden barrels that were carried on whaling ships to store whale oil. This house had also been the home of Barzalai Ray, a crew member of the ill-fated ship, the Essex, which had been struck by a whale and sank. This true story was used by Herman Melville in his writing of Moby Dick.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 66000772.
