with several of hisconverts. This monastery was richly endowed by Dago-bert, who had been greatly impressed by the pietyand zealousness of its founder, the latter havingopenly rebuked the king for his iniquities. Inorder to find greater opportunities for meditation, the holy St. Riquier frequently retired to theforest of Crecy close by, and there, under thebeautiful oaks with which the forest is so richlyendowed, he died, his body being taken to themonastery for interment. In despair the monks of St.Riquier appealed to Hugues Capet, who marchedat the head of an army to St. Omer and demandedthe body. Arnoul in the meanwhile had sent itto Montreuil, whither Capet followed in pursuit, rescued the body of the saint, and, with headuncovered and bare feet, carried
